Professional microneedling for smoother-looking, healthier-feeling skin

SkinPen microneedling is a professional skin treatment designed to support collagen renewal and improve the appearance of skin texture, acne scarring, fine lines, enlarged pores and overall skin quality.

At Skin by Thea, SkinPen is offered as a calm, consultation-led treatment. The aim is not to over-treat the skin or chase a dramatic quick fix, but to work with the skin’s natural repair processes in a controlled, considered way.

What is SkinPen microneedling?

SkinPen is a professional microneedling device that creates precise, controlled micro-injuries in the skin using tiny needles. These micro-injuries stimulate the skin’s natural repair response, supporting collagen remodelling and helping to improve the appearance of texture, acne scarring, fine lines and uneven tone.

Unlike at-home rollers, stamps or shop-bought devices, SkinPen is not about pushing product into the surface of the skin. It is about encouraging the skin to repair and renew itself from within.

Why collagen matters

Collagen is one of the key proteins that gives the skin its structure, firmness and resilience.

As we age, collagen production naturally slows. From the mid-20s onwards, this decline becomes gradual but ongoing, and hormonal changes can accelerate it further. This is one reason the skin can begin to look thinner, less firm, more lined, or slower to bounce back.

Microneedling works with this natural biology.

By creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, SkinPen encourages a healing response that supports collagen and elastin renewal. Over time, this can help the skin look smoother, firmer and more refined.

This is not an instant “quick fix” facial. SkinPen is a treatment that works gradually, with results building over time as the skin responds.

What can SkinPen help with?

SkinPen may be suitable for a range of skin concerns, including:

Acne scarring: SkinPen is particularly well known for improving the appearance of acne scarring. By encouraging collagen remodelling, it can help soften the look of uneven texture and pitted scars over a course of treatments.

Skin texture: If your skin feels rough, uneven or less smooth than it used to, microneedling can support renewal and help improve the overall texture and feel of the skin.

Fine lines and visible ageing: By supporting collagen and elastin, SkinPen may help soften the appearance of fine lines and improve the look of firmness and skin quality over time.

Enlarged pores: As the skin becomes healthier-looking and more refined, pores may appear less noticeable.

Uneven tone and pigmentation marks: Microneedling may help improve the appearance of uneven tone and post-inflammatory marks, depending on the cause, your skin type and your wider skincare routine.

Every skin is different, so suitability and expected results will always be discussed during consultation.

Why professional microneedling matters

At-home dermarollers, stamps and inexpensive needling devices may look similar, but they are not comparable to a professional SkinPen treatment.

The difference is not just the device. It is the precision, hygiene, depth control, skin assessment, treatment planning and aftercare.

At-home tools may create superficial channels in the skin, but they cannot replicate the controlled depth, sterile single-use cartridge system or consistency of a professional microneedling device.

Used incorrectly, needling the skin can also increase the risk of irritation, inflammation, infection, pigmentation changes or barrier damage.

With SkinPen, the treatment is carried out in a controlled setting, with the depth and approach adapted to your skin, your concerns and your tolerance.

Why I chose SkinPen

I chose SkinPen for my treatment room because of its precision, safety features and clinical reputation.

SkinPen uses sterile, single-use cartridges and allows controlled treatment depth, which means microneedling can be performed in a much more measured and consistent way than rolling or stamping the skin manually.

For me, SkinPen fits beautifully with my approach to skin.

I do not believe in overwhelming the skin, stripping it back, or forcing aggressive results. I believe in supporting the skin to function well, repair well and respond well.

SkinPen is an advanced treatment, but it should still feel considered. The best results come from choosing the right treatment at the right time, preparing the skin properly, respecting the barrier, and following good aftercare.

What happens during a SkinPen treatment?

A SkinPen appointment usually takes around one hour. It may take longer if we are treating additional areas such as the neck or décolletage.

Your treatment will usually include:

Consultation and skin assessment
Before treatment, we will discuss your skin concerns, current routine, treatment history, medical history and whether SkinPen is suitable for you.

Skin preparation
The skin is thoroughly cleansed and prepared before treatment.

Numbing
A numbing cream is applied to make the treatment more comfortable.

Microneedling
The SkinPen device is moved across the skin in controlled passes, creating precise micro-injuries to stimulate the skin’s natural repair response.

Post-treatment care
After treatment, calming post-procedure care is applied and you will be given clear aftercare instructions.

What does SkinPen feel like?

Most clients find SkinPen very manageable, especially with numbing cream.

You may feel vibration, pressure, warmth or a scratchy sensation during the treatment. Some areas of the face can feel more sensitive than others, particularly around the forehead, upper lip or bony areas.

Afterwards, the skin usually looks red and feels warm, similar to mild to moderate sunburn. This is expected and usually settles within 24–48 hours.

You may then experience dryness, tightness, light flaking or a rough texture for a few days while the skin renews.

Downtime and aftercare

SkinPen involves some downtime, although this varies from person to person.

Immediately after treatment, your skin may look red, flushed and feel warm. Over the next few days, it may feel dry, tight or slightly rough.

You will need to avoid certain products and activities while the skin is recovering, including active skincare, exfoliation, heat, swimming, heavy exercise, fake tan and makeup for the advised period.

You will be given clear aftercare guidance so you know exactly how to support your skin in the days following your appointment.

When will I see results?

Some clients notice that their skin looks fresher once the initial redness and dryness have settled.

However, the deeper benefits of SkinPen develop gradually. Collagen remodelling takes time, so improvements in texture, scarring, fine lines and firmness tend to build over the weeks and months following treatment.

For most concerns, a course of treatments is recommended.

How many SkinPen treatments will I need?

This depends on your skin, your goals and the concern we are treating.

As a general guide, most clients benefit from a course of 3–6 treatments, usually spaced around 4 weeks apart.

For concerns such as acne scarring or more significant texture changes, a longer course may be recommended.

Maintenance treatments may then be considered every 6 months, depending on your skin and long-term goals.

Who is SkinPen suitable for?

SkinPen may be suitable if you are concerned with:

  • acne scarring

  • uneven texture

  • fine lines

  • enlarged pores

  • dull or tired-looking skin

  • uneven tone

  • overall skin quality

  • early visible signs of ageing

It can be a lovely option for clients who want a treatment that works beneath the surface, supporting long-term skin quality rather than simply creating a temporary glow.

Who may not be suitable for SkinPen?

SkinPen is not suitable for everyone.

Treatment may need to be delayed or avoided if you have active infection, active inflammatory acne, certain skin conditions, impaired healing, recent aesthetic treatments, pregnancy, or are taking certain medications.

This will always be checked before treatment. If SkinPen is not the right option for your skin at that moment, I will guide you towards a more suitable approach.

A considered approach to advanced skin treatments

SkinPen is an advanced treatment, but my approach remains calm, measured and skin-barrier-aware.

I do not believe skin needs to be punished into behaving differently. I believe it needs the right stimulus, the right support, and enough time to respond.

That means preparing the skin properly, choosing the correct treatment depth, supporting healing afterwards, and being realistic about what can be achieved.

The goal is healthier-looking, better-functioning skin over time.

Frequently asked questions

Does SkinPen hurt?

Most clients find the treatment very manageable with numbing cream. You may feel warmth, pressure, vibration or a scratchy sensation, but it should not feel unbearable.

How much downtime is there?

Redness is common for 24–48 hours. Some dryness, tightness or light flaking can follow for several days. Downtime varies depending on your skin and the intensity of treatment.

Can I wear makeup afterwards?

You will need to avoid makeup for the advised period after treatment while the skin is recovering. I will give you clear aftercare instructions at your appointment.

Is SkinPen good for acne scars?

SkinPen is particularly known for improving the appearance of acne scarring, especially when carried out as a course of treatments.

Is SkinPen suitable for sensitive skin?

It depends on the sensitivity, the condition of your barrier, and what is causing the reactivity. Some sensitive skins may need preparation before microneedling. This is why consultation is important.

Can SkinPen help with pigmentation?

SkinPen may help improve the appearance of some uneven tone or post-inflammatory marks, but pigmentation is complex. Suitability depends on the cause, your skin type, your treatment history and your homecare routine.

How soon before an event should I have SkinPen?

SkinPen is not a treatment to have immediately before an event. Because redness, dryness and flaking can occur, it is best planned well in advance.

Do I need a course?

Usually, yes. One treatment can be beneficial, but SkinPen is generally best approached as a course, especially for texture, acne scarring and visible signs of ageing.
